On Wednesday, 18 February 2026, the Bank of Tanzania conducted a benchmarking visit to Namclear to gain insights into Namibia’s successful cheque phase-out journey.
The delegation was led by Mr. Mbarya Koroto, Assistant Manager for Clearing and Settlement at the Bank of Tanzania, and forms part of a week-long study visit hosted by the Bank of Namibia. The visit was aimed at enhancing understanding of best practices and key lessons learned during Namibia’s transition away from cheque-based payments.
Recognising the pivotal role played by Namclear in the implementation of the cheque phase-out programme, the delegation engaged with Namclear to better understand the strategic, operational, and stakeholder coordination processes that underpinned the initiative’s success.
As part of their broader benchmarking programme, the delegation also met with the Payment Association of Namibia, the Ministry of Finance, and a commercial bank to obtain a comprehensive perspective on Namibia’s national cheque phase-out framework.
“We are pleased to welcome the delegation and to share insights from our journey. The benchmarking engagement underscores the value of regional cooperation in strengthening payment system modernisation across the continent,” said Mr. Fabian Tait, Managing Director of Namclear.
Mr. Koroto commended Namclear, Bank of Namibia and industry stakeholders for the successful implementation of the cheque phase-out initiative. He emphasised that the key takeaway from the visit was the importance of strong industry collaboration, which he described as the primary driver behind the programme’s success.
The visit concluded with a tour of Namclear’s operations, providing the delegation with practical insight into the current systems and processes.
